South America Cruise: Ushuaia, Argentina

We cruised around Cape Horn which is at the furthest tip of South America on day 8. We enjoyed the scenery. But since it was raining and cold, we stayed inside and didn’t take pictures.

On day 9 we arrived in Ushuaia.

Ushuaia is known as “the end of the world” as it’s the southernmost city in the world. It’s also the city that’s the closest to Antarctica.

I reserved a rental car to go hiking but decided at the last minute to cancel it because the trail was said to be muddy after recent rains.

Instead, we took a stroll in the city.

Soon we found the End of the World sign.

The walk along the shore was quite pleasant.

There were a lot of tour companies and taxi drivers trying to sell people tours at the port entrance when we got back. We talked to a few and found a taxi driver with a reasonable price. So we set off to visit Tierre del Fuego (Land of Fire) National Park.

After paying our entrance fees (They did accept credit cards but our Costco VISA didn’t work for some reason and the driver ended up paying for us in pesos and we paid him back in dollars), our first stop was the End of the World Train.

The train ride is about 7 km long and would cost almost $37. It wasn’t worth it for me. So we just took some pictures and left.

Next stop was Ensenada Bay (Bahia Ensenada). The water was very calm with reflections. It was beautiful.

The End of the World post office was also here. Many people pay to get their passports stamped here, which was also something I wasn’t interested in. But they were not open today anyway.

We walked along the bay for a little and no matter where we were, the views were incredible. We really enjoyed it here.

Then we headed to Lago Roca.

Next stop was the Green Lagoon.

Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon)

Then to Castorera and hiked the short trail.

Finally Bahia Lapataia, which is the southernmost point you can drive to.

There’s a sign that marks the end of National Route 3, the last leg of the Pan-American Highway network.

We saw a trail nearby and followed it, which led us to a viewpoint of the bay.

Time to head back.

On the way back we stopped at a viewpoint to take some more pictures.

The tour took about three hours and we still had lots of time left when we were dropped off at the port. So we spent a little more time exploring the city in the other direction.

We liked Ushuaia and Tierre del Fuego National Park. It’s definitely worth visiting.
