Idaho Potato Hotel

I learned about Idaho Potato Hotel a while ago and thought it would be a cool place to stay for a night during our Idaho trip. So I booked the hotel on airbnb for tonight and was really looking forward to the experience.

The hotel is in a pretty remote area on a farmland with nothing much going on. There is no wifi and cell service is sporadical, with one bar sometimes at the most if we are lucky. But that is part of the experience.

As the name implies, the “hotel” is shaped like a potato.

There’s a sign outside about the history of the hotel.

The room is pretty small with one bed and no windows. But that isn’t a problem for us.

The other side of the room facing the door.

There is a friendly cow living here too.

The bathroom is very interesting. The sink faucet and toilet seem to be somehow connected. The only way to turn on the faucet at the sink is to flush the toilet which is directly under the sink. This also made using the sink a little awkward. There is no hot water from the faucet and it only runs for a limited time after you flush the toilet. So if you want the water to run longer to wash your face, you’d have to keep flushing the toilet.

Shower stall in the bathroom is quite roomy.

We didn’t use the tub.

There’s also a fireplace in the bathroom but we didn’t use it either.

The bathroom is actually in a separate building away from the potato. It’s not far. But on a dark, cold, and extremely windy night like tonight, getting to the bathroom is a struggle. There is no light outside the potato and the light outside the bathroom is motion activated. So going to the bathroom is completely in the dark until we are close enough to activate the light. But it isn’t bright enough to light the way back to the potato. Because of all these, we are very reluctant to go to the bathroom at night. Fortunately there is no rain or snow tonight, or going to the bathroom would be even more dreadful.

But despite everything, staying at the Potato Hotel is still truly a very unique experience and something I’d highly recommend. Just remember to bring your own food as I don’t remember seeing a restaurant or a market nearby.
