Netherlands is known for its windmills. One of the best places to see these iconic windmills is Kinderdijk.
In the 18th century, 19 mills were built here to pump and drain excess water from the below sea level polders. These windmills are considered a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
It was an easy drive from Moses Bridge which we visited earlier, less than an hour away.
Visiting Kinderdijk was free, via the public foot and cycle path along the windmills and wetlands. But there was a €5 parking fee.
There’s a Museum Windmill where you can find out more about the history and mechanics of the windmills.
