After we landed in Frankfurt in the morning and picked up our rental car, we headed to Eltz Castle which was one of the two castles we planned to visit today.
Eltz Castle is a medieval castle build in the 12th century and has been owned and occupied by the same family for over 850 years. The castle is part of Upper Middle Rhine Valley which is a UNESCO Heritage Site.
We were not interested in the interior of the castle. So we didn’t join a guided tour of the castle and only spent some time touring the grounds and marvel at the medieval architecture.
The second castle we visited was Bruhl Castle / Augustusburg Palace which was built in the 18th century and also happens to be part of a UNESCO Heritage Site.
The interior of Augustusburg Palace is very beautiful. But you can only visit by joining a guided tour in German only and photography isn’t allowed inside. So again, we decided to stay outside and enjoy the extensive gardens instead.
